We open the season with Metin Erksan's Dry Summer (Susuz Yaz, 1963), a tense Turkish melodrama of sibling rivalry, forbidden desire, and water hoarding. A tobacco farmer builds a dam that prevents his neighbours from irrigating their crops, while also lusting after his brother’s wife, with tragic consequences.
The film was restored in 2008 by Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project. You can view the trailer here. Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes. Turkish language with English subtitles.
Content warning: sexual obsession and animal cruelty.
The screening will be followed by a discussion on the themes raised, particularly water scarcity in the context of climate change.
Further screenings will take place on Saturdays 11th July and 1st August, with additional dates to be announced.
